Hollis Wake – Without Her Here lyrics

There was a poster of Madonna on her bedroom wall before she learned that there was more to life than Borderline and Lucky Star.
Then instead there was a painting that she made in secret using paint she found in her garage between the furnace and the car.
Her father left her mother when she was too young to know the reasons why as well as she knows them by know.
Her life became a question of, "Will I get out? And if I do, then tell me when and tell me where and how!"

And now and then, she's gone and she's back again.
And I didn't think I could comprehend the world as well without her here.
And every now and again, I know that she pretends that life moves on without her as if she were never there.

High school was just a game, another step until she had the time to find herself a place to mellow out and convalesce.
Her modus operandi was to hide behind things she knew wouldn't raise a question possibly construed as meaningless.
And something down inside had made her wary of the stares that she endured when not surrounded by her friends.
And she knew that she had ways of knowing what was most important would elude those who had made those things their ends.

But if she were never there, then I wouldn’t remember anything about her. And I wouldn’t care a thing about her.

Now she’s all the way across the country, in a cramped upstairs apartment, knowing that she’s far enough away to be herself. And all the paintings that she did when she was young are piled underneath the photos of her current boyfriend on a dusty shelf.
She feels like she’d be lucky to forget the girl she once was, in those troubling, humiliating years.
She does so by forgetting all the people who had loved her, but who now just make her wary of her peers.
